After a thorough cleaning, the camera was back to working condition again. I'm glad I did. Removing and replacing the battery did the trick. im afraid warranty wont cover this one. Source

Note that this problem applies to ALL cameras with telescopic lens barrel (optical) zoom. Remove the batteries and replace them with brand new ones.
