Will Xbox 360 Hardware Problems Lead to more OnLive Users?

Posted on 30. Mar, 2009 by admin in Hardware, News & Articles

rrodFor those that don’t know, the Xbox 360 does one thing very well. That is giving you the red ring of death! The Xbox 360 is well known for hardware problems and the red ring of death basically means your Xbox 360 is now a brick. The failure rate of Xbox 360s is through the roof. I personally have had 3 different Xbox 360s and everyone I know that has a 360 has had to get a new one due to the red ring of death at least once. I and many others are frustrated with this problem. Neither Sony nor Nintendo has these problems, so Microsoft really has no excuse for the absurdly high failure rate of Xbox 360s.

The real question is however; will these hardware problems with the Xbox 360 lead to gamers jumping ship from the Xbox to OnLive? Because of the way OnLive works, there is no console and if there is any hardware failure, it’s up to OnLive to fix it since they own and operate the servers you will be playing on. On top of that, if there are hardware problems with OnLive, they will likely be fixed almost instantly because it could affect a number of users and all OnLive really has to do is not use that particular server. OnLive has a big leg up on other game systems that are expensive and prone to hardware failure.

I think it’s too early to tell if gamers will switch over to OnLive due to Xbox 360 hardware problems, but it is definitely something to think about. I personally won’t trust the reliability of Microsoft’s next console because of their widespread hardware problems on the Xbox 360.

Haha, another whiny butt-nugget, pushing his anti-microsoft agenda. Dude, you are saying nothing the we haven’t before. You are bringing up this crap to get hits on your website.

@g-man

Lol, thanks for the comment. I have nothing against Microsoft or the Xbox 360. I have both an Xbox 360 and PS3 and I definitely play my Xbox 360 much more often than the PS3. I still enjoy every gaming system out there though and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Xbox 360’s main weakness imo is their hardware.

I just thought I would make a post about how those that are frustrated by crappy Microsoft hardware will likely enjoy not having to worry about hardware problems with OnLive.

Are you kidding me? Aside from E74 problems being inflated because of the internet I’m not sure what the author is trying to prove. If you think for a second that any online poll is “scientific” your mistaken. The internet likes to blow things up out of proportion. That is not to say there isn’t problems but no one in their right mind wants to jump aboard the lag fest that is onLive. The same article could poke fun at the price of the PS3. Different smell, same shit.

Talk about an article for the sake of an article huh…

No, it wont lead to more OnLive users, now if it had come out a year or two ago, yeah, many may have switched. But RROD isn’t a HUGE issue anymore, so dont expect people to jump the boat now that there is something new out there.

(PS, I love OnLive, its genius.)

On the contrary. When my Gaybox 3shitty red ringed on me, I traded in all my games and switched to Sony. If onlive had been present and I was comfortable with the price and my internet I would have def tried it out. Everyone sign up for the summer Beta for onlive from their website and hope you get picked. Seems pretty epic. Oh yeah, the 360 sucks. N00bs.

I think with the $1 billion Microsoft spent to fix the problem not to mention the public relations nightmare associated with the “Red Ring of Death” or Error 74 problems that Microsoft will not make the mistake of trying to save money next time by designing IN-HOUSE.

Unlike others posting here, I am simply going to say that yes, the 360 hardware problems will lead me to use OnLive.

@RuddigerPez
Not sure why your avatar is kissing puppies, lol. I think wordpress recognizes your IP or name or something with another account somewhere else on another blog or something where that is avatar? I’m not really sure, I need to work with the commenting system a little here though to have threaded responses and something more than that boring blue avatar.

Edit: Oh, I think it is the email address that you used.

WTH? There´s nothing new here. A long time we all know those problems and guess what: XBOX is still the worthiest (and sold) console despite the ring of death, which, can we say, it´s already buried past. Since the latest hardware improvements, I haven´t seen a brick console I don´t even remember when… and I work with it.
So… cut the gab.

All things electronic will have their problems and the grass may not be greener on the other side of the fence if you have had problems with Xbox and PS look before you leap into the unknown…the electronic gremlins are out there waiting for your cash.

Well i had 2 xboxes failing on me, but that doesnt change the fact that its an awesome console. I wont go to Onlive because my country doesnt have resources to justify it being as good as it claims.. and if it did have it i still wouldnt get it… I believe that when i buy something that i want concrete proof that it belongs to me not.. tht is somewhere in someones server

1 RROD
1 E74

And is still play my xbox everyday

How on earth can OnLive possibly work? The facts and figures just don’t add up.

The amount of $ to create a datacenter that would house all of the servers required would be phenomenal.

Bandwidth is another issue, they say that 5Mbps for 720p gaming, again that just won’t work.

This is all poppycock.

I am definitely going to get onlive. I have gone through six xbox 360 consoles since I bought one at launch. The first three that I bought had the red ring of death (they were all replaced by consoles right off the shelf because of the Best Buy warrenty I purchased) and were all launch consoles. The fourth kept freezing up on me and telling me to insert every 360 game that I tried into an Xbox 360 console. The fifth was put in the front seat of my car when I moved (to prevent damage) and then that one broke and I could hear screws moving around. The sixth has a broken fan that broke after two weeks and can be heard from the other side of the house (like nails down a chalkboard) and I never touched it, then I picked it up after it broke and guess what. I could hear screws bouncing around inside. So I am now selling my console after getting it replaced and am unsure if I should get a PS3 or OnLive. Good article.

My take is this… If the OnLive servers are down, or my internet is down… I could concievably have thousands of dollars of games I cannot play. I don’t own any of them, even though I paid full price. What you folks are doing SHOULD be illegal without providing a means of providing a boxed version fo the game for the users to play on thier PC or game console. I have over 800 games. I’m a collector. I only “own” 5 titles as digital, and I even have backups of those so I can still play them offline. I guess what I’m trying to say is… why are so many companies trying to scam people out of money to “buy” something they will never actually “own”. I mean.. am I the only one who thinks people who buy digital only services and “products” are idiots?
