PlayStation to Compete with OnLive? - Sony Registers “PS Cloud”
Posted on 31. Mar, 2009 by admin in News & Articles
Sony recently registered a trademark for “PS Cloud”. This probably means that Sony is working to develop a cloud computing service for PlayStation, or at least thinking about it. If Sony does develop a cloud computing gaming service, it would directly compete with the OnLive gaming service. OnLive is set to launch this year. So even if Sony is actively developing a cloud computing game service, I’m guessing that at the very earliest it would be late 2010 before Sony could launch something that competes with OnLive.
Here is an excerpt from the trademark filing (sorry about the caps):
CLOUD COMPUTING DATA CENTER MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE; COMMUNICATIONS SOFTWARE FOR CONNECTING INTERNET RADIO; COMMUNICATIONS SOFTWARE FOR CONNECTING INTERNET RADIO FOR HAND-HELD GAMES WITH LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAYS; COMPUTER GAME PROGRAMS; COMPUTERS; CONSUMER VIDEO GAME CONSOLES FOR USE WITH AN EXTERNAL DISPLAY SCREEN OR MONITOR; DOWNLOADABLE ELECTRONIC PUBLICATION IN THE NATURE OF MAGAZINES, BOOKS AND NEWSPAPERS IN THE FIELD OF MUSIC, VIDEO AND VIDEO GAME; DOWNLOADABLE IMAGE FILES VIA THE INTERNET; DOWNLOADABLE MUSIC FILES VIA THE INTERNET; ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS AND CD-ROMS, ALL ENCODED AUTOMATIC PLAYING PROGRAMS FOR ELECTRONIC MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS; GAME PROGRAMS FOR HAND-HELD GAMES WITH LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAYS; GAME PROGRAMS FOR MOBILE PHONE; GAME PROGRAMS FOR CONSUMER VIDEO GAME MACHINES; HAND-HELD DIGITAL AUDIO PLAYERS; METRONOMES; PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSISTANTS; PHONOGRAPH RECORDS FEATURING MUSIC; PRE-RECORDED VIDEO DISCS AND VIDEO TAPES FEATURING MUSIC, COMEDY, DRAMA, ACTION, ADVENTURE OR ANIMATION

Sony also registered the domain PlayStationCloud.com only just a few months ago.

Reasons why sony will fail:
1) They will try to cram as many gimmicks into it as possible, aka, Blueray player, music players, and probably a coffee machine in there somewhere.
2) They wont bother with design again, they will steal everyone elses ideas, and probably hardware designs too, not to mention they wont bother changing the pad.
3) It will be over priced and for nothing (much like the ps3 xD)
4) Sony is already failing, departments are closing, no one on this earth still buys any stero/mp3/TV/dvd/blueray stuff from them, simply because there are so many BETTER choices out there.
5) Microsoft will probably do something 10 times better, and if you don’t aggree. Go check out how much Microsoft is actually worth, they pretty much own the comp technology world.
6) Nobody is looking forward to ‘metal gear 49, snake breaks his hip’. Or FF100,000,00,000,009

Reasons why ricsic6is wrong.
1) Bluray is the leading HD technology. Sony won. Any playing MP3s is hardly a gimmick now is it? Its a simple feature. Sony like features, I like features.
2) Microsoft stole CELL tech for their chip. Not the other way around.

And as for the xbox controller ==>> http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/95/Dreamcast_Controller.jpg/800px-Dreamcast_Controller.jpg
They just changed the button colors and added a second stick.
Now who copies?
3) PS3’s were expensive, granted , but are dropping in price. I am broke most of the time and I got one for gods sake.
4) Its not falling apart. Departments are closing, sure, but so are MS departments, Nintendo Departments and just about every other big company… its a recession.
5) Microsoft couldn’t innovate their way out of a paper bag. Even their first product was BOUGHT (MS-DOS). MS can market, not develop.
6) I am. Falling out of your retirement home bed has never been so stealthy
I have a 360, PS3, Wii and PC, and I play all of them. Attacking a console is only because you are buying into the marketing of the other, or you dont have it and resent that, so have to make yourself feel as if its the “bad console”
Stop worrying about the fact there is no MS cloud, and realize that you want a PS3 deep down. I am here for you if you want a shoulder to cry on.
